Brain Injury - The Statistics

 

Each year it is estimated that more than a million people in the UK go to hospital as a result of a head injury.

 

Of these:

 

Approximately 150,000 people will suffer a minor Brain Injury

 

Approximately 10,000 people will suffer a moderate Brain Injury

 

Approximately 11,000 people will suffer a severe Brain injury.  Of these 11,000 only around 15% will return to work within 5 years.  Many will never return to work and around 4,500 will require full time support and care for the rest of their lives.

 

More than 120,000 people in the UK are currently suffering the long-term effects as a result of a Brain Injury.  This number is increasing every year.

 

Anyone can be affected by Brain Injury, although males are three times more likely to suffer a Brain Injury than females, this risk rises to five times more likely between the ages of 16 - 30.  Anyone over the age 65 is also at high risk of acquiring a Brain Injury.
